You guys!!!! Look what happened! The incredible author (and my friend!) Arleigh Jacobs included me and the rest of our critique group in her new book's dedication. Because together, we’ve done something magical which you can do too: Find someone who can make you a better writer.

Arleigh and I are in a thriller writers' critique group together. That means our small group of girls meets on zoom once a week to help each other in our writing.

Sometimes we pose content problems (“Should this next chapter be about this or that?”), other times we discuss scheduling issues (“How do I get my kids to leave me alone for two damn minutes so I can write?”), and occasionally we just geek out (“Ooh, did you hear about that new structure idea from what’s-his-name?”).

This group helps with my hobby—my day job is coaching and editing non-fiction; my evening hours are spent working on a thriller novel.

BUT Arleigh’s comment speaks to exactly why I chose to be a book coach in my day job (or… calling?!): to challenge smart, insightful, inspiring people to be even better writers.

Now, I know you. You’re a modest little butterfly and you don’t think of yourself as overly smart, insightful, or inspiring. You know you’re not bad in those areas, but you’re not here to toot your own horn.

But I bet we can agree YOUR IDEA is smart, insightful, and inspiring. Even if you’re not exactly sure how your book will come together yet, you know you have something worthwhile to share.

Right?

So, whether it’s a critique group, a book coach, or some other literary genius in your life, I want you to find someone who can do what Arleigh and I, and the rest of our critique group girls, do for each other.

Find someone who can make you a better writer.

Your smart, insightful, inspiring idea deserves it.

Arleigh released her new book this week for pre-orders, and she is so proud of it. (Rightly so. It’s great.) I want you to feel what it’s like to share your work with the world, too.

It’s thrilling.

(Get it? Because Arleigh’s book is a thriller?! And we're a thriller critique group!)

Anyway, find someone who can make you a better writer.

And if you like military thrillers, kick-ass women, fast planes, or anything TOP GUN-ish, go find this book, too! (Shameless plug for my friend, but I feel good about it because the book is top-notch.) It's STRIKE OUT by Arleigh Jacobs, available for pre-order here.
