Q. How long does it take to get GOOD feedback on your book writing?
A. 19 minutes 13 seconds.
Seriously. I timed it.
And even though I'm a professional editor and book coach, it wasn't me giving the feedback. For once, I was on the other side of the fence. Or... the zoom screen, I guess.
Because I'd submitted my draft fiction book to a literary agent for feedback. Even though I'm an effin' amazing non-fiction writer (and a humble one, too), I'm a newbie to making stories up. So I wanted some pointers from a pro.
And this pro—her name is CeCe Lyra—is the co-host of The Shit No One Tells You About Writing podcast.
So she pulled me onto the show, blasted me with her unfiltered thoughts about my writing, and recorded it for the whole world to listen in.
Wanna hear?
In 19 minutes and 13 seconds, you'll discover:
The best way to start a chapter (hint: it's the OPPOSITE of what I did),
A top tip for writing your book as if it's a letter (which I also did not do well), and
How to use consequences to make your book description more exciting.
CeCe said some nice shit, too. Thank god! Plus you'll get to be nosey and hear what I'm working on!
But beyond being nosey, if you want to write a memoir, this podcast is invaluable because you'll need the same storytelling techniques fiction writers rely on. And CeCe's input was amazing, so check it out.
Here's how to listen:
Click here to access online or search for The Shit No One Tells You About Writing on your podcast app.
Choose the episode titled Ken Follett's Incredibly Practical Tips for Writers. (Somehow the world-famous author interviewed after got into the title instead of me. Ah well. Next time.)
Listen from the beginning, or fast-forward to 19 minutes 40 seconds to hear my segment.
And if you'd love the chance for fast, incredibly helpful feedback on your own writing, take the quiz below to get on my email list. Then, you’ll be the first to know about a lil something I have coming for you over the next few months which will help you get the same type of invaluable input on your non-fiction book.
