Recently, we talked about the six reasons writing a book is worth it. And each point was so reasonable and sensible. But there is a secret reason why you should write a book. Because frankly, us humans are not always reasonable and sensible.

For many of us, the secret reason we want to write a book is:

We feel inexplicably and irresistibly drawn to do it.

That’s it. That’s all.

The illogical urge

We can’t prove the book’s worth on a profit and loss statement. We can’t demonstrate how much business we’ll get from it, or count how many souls we’ll save, or quantify how much “better” someone’s life will be from hearing our story or message or advice.

But we still wanna do it.

There’s this urge to write a book that won’t go away, even though we have a million reasons not to do this now. Family... work... the timing is never right, and there’s always something else arguing for attention.

But the urge doesn't care.

That feeling of being drawn to the page doesn't go away.

Because it knows this is something we care about. It's what sits deep in our souls. We can't explain it, and we can't make it go away.

It’s okay

I’m here to say this is okay.

Perhaps you can't explain why you're called to write, share your message, or leave a part of you in this world... but you are.

Listen to that. Honor that.

Steve Jobs said, “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Whatever you think of Mr. Apple, we can’t deny his products have had an enormous impact on the world. That’s what most of us want, right? We want our message, our story, our book to have an impact.

That’s a good enough reason.

So, if this is YOUR reason to write… then go forth and write!
