Prince Harry released his instant best-selling memoir Spare. And guess what… he used a ghostwriter to pen the thing. Which made a bunch of folks ask: What is a ghostwriter? Is having one a good thing? A bad thing? A spoiled brat thing? Does it “count” as writing your own book when you use a ghostwriter? Is ghostwriting cheating?!

There were some amazing articles written about ghostwriting which speak to these questions. I want to share some of them with you, in case you, too, are thinking about how to get your message into the world when you don’t love the writing.

If you have something to say, but aren’t getting anywhere trying to write on your own, read these articles.

  • The New York Times wrote a fascinating behind-the-scenes article called “When the Writing Demands Talent and Discretion, Call the Ghostwriter.

  • Here is a great piece on how ghostwriters capture another person's voice and the issue of credit from ABC News.

  • This post is from the industry magazine Publishers Weekly, and discusses what publishing insiders really think about ghostwriters.

  • In an oldie-but-goodie post, I wrote about the difference between an editor, book coach, and ghostwriter here.

  • I also wrote here about what to do when you think, I should be able to write this book on my own.

I’m currently (as of January 2023) fully-booked for ghostwriting until February 2024, so I’m not here to sell you on anything. I just want to open your mind to the possibilities. To ideas that might work for you and the book that’s in your heart.

Is ghostwriting the way forward for that book?

It’s worth considering.

Shoot me an email and let me know if you have questions. I’m happy to help.

Thanks,

I do NOT want you to set big writing goals
